Commitment Is Key For Allen

Dave Allen is enjoying life working with Jay McFarlane, but is leaving the Scottish heavyweight under no illusion about the hard work involved as they get their venture off to a winning start.

Speaking in Glasgow following McFarlane’s victorious return to the ring, a unanimous decision against Shaun Duffy, Allen stated Jay was as “good as he can be four weeks in [to training with Dave]” adding that he was “a tough kid with great character”.

Admitting he sees glimpses of himself in the Ultimate Boxxer fan favourite, Allen continued on how the work ethic has to be as high “for the next ten years as it has been for the last four weeks”.

Allen said “I’ve been in hospital beds and ambulances too many times, to know how seriously you’ve got take this sport. I saw him at Ultimate Boxxer, he had great character and had a bit about him, but the life he’s been living for the last 18 months is not how you should be living. This is not a game and not something we take lightly.”

Split Decision defeat to Mark Bennett at Ultimate Boxxer 6 put an end to McFarlane’s hopes of being crowned King of the Heavyweights, the title eventually being scooped by Allen’s former foe Nick Webb, but that didn’t prevent Jay from creating headlines and grabbing the attention of the sold out crowd in December.

Described by former world champion Paulie Malignaggi as “a heavyweight who moves like a middleweight”, McFarlane has earned himself the nickname ‘Ghost’ owing to his elusive skillset. Such a style can be eye catching as well as successful in the sport of boxing, particularly in the Heavyweight division, but also requires core stamina and strong fitness levels.

Allen continued “The moment Jay slips up in the gym is the moment he goes home. It doesn’t matter that he’s a funny likeable guy, if he wants to achieve what he believes he can he has to work for it.”
